An upstream MEP was started by @rowanc1 that adds inline attributes to MyST Markdown.

I am co-authoring / editing that proposal, which will (if accepted) commit the MyST team to implementing a new kind of syntax.

As part of our "tactical upstream work", this issue tracks the implementation of this feature.
