If the application has not been used before, meaning the application manifest has not been added to SteamVR in appconfig.json yet, it will also attempt to register the application to automatically launch with SteamVR.

Due to popular demand, or I guess a general need, it is now possible to trigger screenshots and the viewfinder from the keyboard.

I've limited this to the function keys plus modifiers to keep it simple. The choices goes up to F15 so there are a few keys outside the standard range just in case.

It took a while to get this working but I'm pretty sure it's stable and usable now, make sure to report any issues you bump into here.

  • Added option to also save an image for the right eye, this one is derived from the images saved by default and is saved without additional encoding options, so seemingly without any compression.
  • Removed the experimental super sampling feature, never had any positive feedback about it anyway, just screwed up people's settings.
  • Added the resulting screenshot resolution to the notification.
  • Fixed a spelling error in the input actions
  • Updated OpenVR to v1.14.15

A user contacted me about the application shutting down when launching a game after the last release. It was due to listening to the wrong event, one which also happens when SteamVR Home is closed launching something else.

The application should now appear in SteamVR settings > Startup / Shutdown > CHOOSE STARTUP OVERLAY APPS, make sure it is set to ON if you want it to launch with SteamVR.

I've added an exit with SteamVR option, default is true, because if the application is launched by SteamVR while not exiting with SteamVR, it will prevent further launches of SteamVR. It's an issue I've reported to Valve.

v0.40 Dashboard fix and gamepad support

  • Taking screenshots and showing the viewfinder is disabled if the dashboard is opened, an attempt to prevent an input lock which caused screenshots to be spammed when interacting in the dashboard.
  • Added bindings for gamepad, press back + start (Xbox) to capture a screenshot. No capacitive input so viewfinder is currently unbound. This was added because the default SteamVR bindings for gamepad does currently not include a binding for screenshots.

v0.39 Add rehook button, remove log

  • Removed the log output as it wasn't very helpful.
  • Added a button to rehook the screenshot shortcut, as a means to fix it detaching during long sessions.
  • Added an automatic rehook whenever the viewfinder is toggled on, in my testing this seems to work fine to avoid it detaching, but report if you experience any issues.
  • Updated to OpenVR 1.12.5

v0.36 More settings

  • Small updates to the overlay graphics.
  • Can now set the size of the center part of the overlay.
  • The overlay will now be disabled for as long as a screenshot is processing, this will prevent it from flicker on when releasing the screenshot chord.
  • Tray icon now has a tooltip.

This started as a stupid experiment trying to take screenshots with supersampling and ended up becoming a full on accessory where that specific feature is a side note. See the README for more details, but in short these are the main features.

  1. Set a specific output directory for your screenshots
  2. Saves uncompressed .PNG files
  3. Can replace the default screenshot chord of SteamVR
  4. Can show the resulting screenshot thumbnail in a notification
  5. Can show a viewfinder with effective crop, roll and pitch indicators
  6. Can play an audio file on capture
