/* In loading up the 'day data' (basically a low-precision RA/dec for
the geocentric position of each asteroid as of a certain day), we
attempt to open a file for that day of the form YYYYMMDD.chk. If
the file is opened, and the header indicates the correct version,
number of asteroids, and checksum, we just load up the data
from the file and return. Otherwise, this function creates the
'day data' file, saves it for future use, and returns the data
it's just generated.
It used to be as simple as that, but 'astcheck' now gets used in a
mode where many instances are run in parallel. Run seventeen
instances for the same day, and all seventeen would start generating
.chk files. Ideally, _one_ would do so and the other sixteen would
wait for the file to be ready. So accessing and building of .chk
files now works as follows :
(1) We try to open the .chk day data file we need and read in the data.
The file may not exist, or may contain outdated data (the 'sof_checksum'
or other header data may not match what we're looking for). If that's
the case, we drop through the code to the point where we generate the
day data and create the day data file. Right away, we write out the
header information and fflush() it. That way, the other sixteen
processes will see a header with no data (yet) and realize that they
should wait a bit for the data to become available.
(2) If we read in the header and it's what we're looking for (its
"magic number", checksum, and the number of asteroids match),
we try to read in the actual asteroid data. That part may simply
succeed (because the .chk file in question has already been completed).
If we only get none or some of the data, we assume we'll have to
wait for some other process to finish creating and writing the file.
In that case, we 'sleep' for one second and try reading the data
again. Ideally, we eventually get all the data. Just as a check,
if this takes more than sixty seconds, we assume something has gone
seriously wrong and bomb out; this is to avoid having phantom
processes left hanging. (Haven't seen that actually happen yet.) We
also close the input file and reopen it and fseek() to the start of
the remaining data. That's just to force an update to the input
file size. */
