Related to the discussion about CARTA support for optical astronomy, I can report that it was desirable for that community to see error bars/ranges displayed over the 1D spectra. At the time, this functionality was also added to the casaviewer.

Optical data-cubes typically have errors stored in a second FITS extension of the same dimension as the data-extension, e.g. http://www.eso.org/rm/api/v1/public/releaseDescriptions/102
