MakeyMakey

MakeyMakey page - small board that is detected by the computer as a
keyboard.
After plugging in some cables and closing the circuit, a key press is detected.
This key press can then be used to program Scratch or any other application to react to it.

Workshop plan

To have a better focus from Ninjas, we will have a main theme Exercise games (or something similar:)).
Roli will present the videos and introduce MakeyMakey

There should be one mentor near each table to show it closely.
We will have about 33 MakeyMakeys - about 1 per 2 Ninjas.
The general idea is to let the Ninjas plug them into computers and work together on some small projects in
Scratch or other tool.

MakeyMakey project ideas

piano - create buttons out of playdoh and make a piano or other instruments. Several Ninjas
can use couple MakeyMakeys to create orchestra. A mentor, parent or other Ninja may set music rythm.

connect existing games - over time Ninjas created own games and could use various buttons
to steer them

check conductivity - connect different things and see what conducts electricity - eg. by
making noise

draw pencil labirynth - draw a labirynth with pencil and connect it to MakeyMakey. Try to
walk through it using a wire also connected to MakeyMakey. Make a buzz and display Game Over when the wire
touches the labirynth's wall.

Operation game - see: Operation.
Ninjas need to make a patient, tweezers (out of wire) and some organs out of paper.
Make a patient with some holes inside. The holes need to be made out of aluminium foil and connected to
MakeyMakey.
Tweezers can be made out of wire and also connected to MakeyMakeys ground.
Try take out the organ with tweezers without touching the aluminium hole.

typewriter - only 7 keys can be programmed, but it is good enough to make a typewriter and
write in notepad. No special program is required, but also Scratch can be used.

people conduct electricity - several people can be connected to MakeyMakey to make an
instrument or control game etc.

For older Ninjas:

measure rain level - use wires of different length to detect how much water there is in
some container. Display in Scratch or elsewhere

flooding detector - detect if there is water on the floor. Check several places if there is
water on the floor.

cyber "glove" to control a game - use wires, sticky tape, paper and aluminium foil to build
glove that can be used to control game character.
It can be done in the following way:
Isolate each finger tip and attach cable to it. Then the thumb can be the ground and fingers are controlling
arrows. By pressing the thumb to one of fingers, the circuit closes and signal is sent to computer.

memory game - memory game to repeat pattern of button presses - see: Simon game

Possible changes

No internet or scratch is down. I will have couple pendrives with Scratch offline like last
time.

Someone is joining for the first time. They can join with other Ninja to work together. The
more experienced Ninja can help with Scratch for example.

Ninja doesn't want to work with MakeyMakey. We will have our Scratch cards and Lua
introduction cards with us if the Ninja is more eager to do that.

Welcome desk

We will need to have a desk at the entrance to welcome parents, mentors and ninjas.

Update list of participants as parents join.

Help with laptop setup (installing flash for ligthbot and scratch groups).

Parents will need to sign a consent to take photos and use them for the promotional purposes.
