Implausible wishlist stuff:
I mentioned previously that some of our tree inventory input files give only common names. There are others that only give USDA PLANTS codes, like QURU for Quercus rubra -- and maybe there are similar codes for other taxon groups? From what I can see neither ITIS nor GBIF know about those so I don't know what you could do for them; I just wanted to point out that other identifiers are out there, and there's at least this one guy for whom they could be useful.

If there's a USDA API from which the required information can be obtained (example), then a function for translating these codes to names may be possible.
