Our discussions here, here and here suggest that the problem framing in the working group was too narrow to move towards the goal set for this group. Improving Developer Advocacy is necessary to improve Developer Experience.

As a Developer Advocate and member of the Developer Experience Working Group, research and present findings on Developer Thriving Frameworks to enhance the understanding of what enables developers to thrive in their work, and inform strategies to improve the overall developer experience.

  • Russo, “Beyond the Pandemic”;
  • Greiler, Storey, and Noda, “An Actionable Framework for Understanding and Improving Developer Experience.”
Details

Specific Key Results:

  1. Conduct Literature Review:
    • Research existing frameworks, models, and studies related to developer thriving, well-being, and productivity.
    • Identify and analyze the key factors that contribute to developer thriving.
  2. Analyze Case Studies and Industry Reports:
    • Review case studies and industry reports that highlight successful developer experience initiatives.
    • Extract insights on how these initiatives contributed to developer thriving.
  3. Identify Emerging Trends and Patterns:
    • Analyze industry trends, research papers, and blogs to identify emerging patterns and trends related to developer thriving.
    • Synthesize these findings to identify potential areas of focus for future research.
  4. Present Findings and Recommendations:
    • Create a comprehensive report detailing the research findings, including key factors, success stories, and emerging trends.
    • Develop recommendations for the Developer Experience Working Group on how to incorporate these findings into the organization's developer experience strategy.
  5. Collaborate with Stakeholders:
    • Schedule meetings with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product, and design, to discuss the research findings and gather feedback.
    • Integrate feedback and insights from stakeholders into the final report and recommendations.

Deliverables:

  1. A written report (max. 10 pages) summarizing the research findings, including:
    • Executive summary
    • Overview of Developer Thriving Frameworks
    • Key factors contributing to developer thriving
    • Emerging trends and patterns
    • Case studies and industry reports analysis
    • Recommendations for the Developer Experience Working Group
  2. A presentation summarizing the research findings and recommendations (max. 30 minutes)

Timeline:

  • Research phase: 4 weeks
  • Report writing: 2 weeks
  • Review and feedback: 2 weeks
  • Presentation preparation: 1 week

Performance Metrics:

  1. Completeness and quality of the research report
  2. Reception and feedback from stakeholders
