@ciernyd hi - little info, [as a follower of this repo) - as far as I can remember that (specific exit code) is a RStudio issue see for example
rstudio/rstudio#9019 (comment)
Potential workarounds being:

1. using the {tinytex} (package) or
2. running knitr::knit2pdf from the R Console (also fine from within RStudio) since it seems to be related to the RStudio IDE's Knit button itself in some form
