GREI Objective 2 - Consistent Metadata

Overview

Implement an initial set for consistent metadata models to enable discovery of NIH funded data in Generalist Repositories.

Completed work:

• All repositories have implemented the 7 basic metadata fields established in Year 1.
• GREI Metadata and Search Subcommittee Recommendations_V01_2023-06-29

Tasks

Year 1

• Y1 3.3 Implement required metadata fields: title, description, author/creator, funder, grant ID, publication year, content type.

Year 2

• Y2 3.3.1 Draft metadata fields proposal: Create draft metadata fields proposal based on subcommittee knowledge; Draft view on controlled vocabularies
• Y2 3.3.2 Gather feedback on proposal: Use cases and metrics subcommittee to provide feedback on what’s missing/ should be changed
• Y2 3.3.3 Review proposal vs DataCite schema: For each metadata field in the metadata schema, review whether the DataCite metadata field format/controlled vocabulary is suitable; if not, work with DataCite to evolve the schema; if controlled vocabularies have limitations, identify solutions
• Y2 3.3.4 Ensuring metadata is captured with sufficient quality: Identify recommendations for repositories to ensure metadata is captured (e.g. metadata type) with sufficient quality
• Y2 3.3.5 Final metadata schema: Publish final metadata schema publicly
• Y2 3.3.6 Repository implementation plans: Each repository will plan, potentially in collaboration or discussion with other repositories or the subcommittee, on how to close the gaps

Year 3

• Y3 2.1 Continue Metadata Recommendation v1 and develop v2 #8
