unable to check ‘https://nixos.org/channels/nixpkgs-unstable’ on OS X 10.11.2

Tried installing Nix twice on a Vanilla OS X 10.11.2 (VMWare Fusion 8) using the shell command (curl https://nixos.org/nix/install | sh) and keep getting the same error (unable to check ‘https://nixos.org/channels/nixpkgs-unstable’).

I'm a total Nix Newb not sure how to install this.

I have not installed XCode as the page here (https://nixos.org/wiki/Nix_on_OS_X) seems to indicate it is no longer required in the compatibility table).

Any help would be appreciated...
