When I try to create a numbered list using something that is not arabic numbers followed by a period (for example roman numbers or letters with a parenthesis on the right or surrounded by parentheses) they always get converted to arabic.

For example, if I write this list:

b) b
c) c
d) d

the output is

Captura de Pantalla 2022-10-11 a las 11 14 36

Is this behavior intended or a bug?

Yeah this seems like a real bug. Given this RST:

Enumerated Lists
----------------

1. Arabic numerals.

   a) lower alpha)

      (i) (lower roman)

          A. upper alpha.

             I) upper roman)

2. Lists that don't start at 1:

   3. Three

   4. Four

   C. C

   D. D

   iii. iii

   iv. iv

We expect it to look like this from Furo, https://sphinx-themes.org/sample-sites/furo/kitchen-sink/lists/:

But our Pytorch theme looks like this:

Fixed in Furo (#425):
