Can't toggle segments

Hi folks!

It seems that I am unable to toggle any segment of the modeline when using Spacemacs. If I try spaceline-toggle-buffer-position-off for example, the buffer position segment does not disappear. I had a look at the default config of spaceline and tried to disable some of the segements that were visible in Spacemas, but it did not change anything. Also adding the call to the toggle function to my dotspacemacs/user-config didn't do anything. Am I doing something wrong here?

Ok, adding (spaceline-toggle-hud-off) to my spacemacs/user-config actually worked. But can these toggle functions only be used there and not interactively?
