What is Open Redirect?

Open Redirect is a vulnerability that occurs when a web application redirects users to a different website or URL without proper validation or authorization checks. Attackers exploit this vulnerability to trick users into visiting malicious websites, phishing pages, or other malicious content.

How Does Open Redirect Work?

  • Redirect Functionality: Many web applications use redirect functionality to direct users to a different page or website after certain actions, such as logging in, logging out, or processing requests.

  • User-Controlled Input: If the application allows users to specify the destination URL for redirection, attackers can manipulate this input to redirect users to malicious or phishing websites.

  • Lack of Validation: If the application fails to properly validate or sanitize the redirect URL, attackers can craft URLs that appear legitimate but actually redirect users to malicious websites under their control.

Example Scenario

Suppose a web application has a login page where users are redirected to a specific page after successful authentication. The application accepts a redirect parameter in the URL to determine the destination after login. If an attacker crafts a malicious URL like https://example.com/login?redirect=https://malicious.com, users clicking on this link may be redirected to the malicious website after logging in.

Impact of Open Redirect

  • Phishing Attacks: Attackers use open redirects to create phishing pages that mimic legitimate websites, tricking users into divulging sensitive information such as login credentials, financial details, or personal data.

  • Malware Distribution: Open redirects can be used to redirect users to websites hosting malware, leading to malware infections, data breaches, or compromise of user devices.

  • Identity Theft: Open redirects may facilitate identity theft by directing users to fake login pages where their credentials are captured by attackers for malicious purposes.

Mitigating Open Redirect

  • Whitelist Valid URLs: Maintain a whitelist of trusted URLs or domains that the application is allowed to redirect users to, rejecting any redirects to untrusted or potentially malicious destinations.

  • Encode Redirect URLs: Encode or encrypt redirect URLs to prevent attackers from tampering with or manipulating them to redirect users to unintended destinations.

  • Require Authentication: Require users to authenticate or authorize redirection requests, ensuring that only authenticated and authorized users can be redirected to external websites.

  • Educate Users: Educate users about the risks of clicking on suspicious links or being redirected to unknown websites, promoting awareness of phishing tactics and safe browsing habits.
