What led to this? Can you reproduce it?
What does "modman-log.txt" say after that happens?

Have you ever used any mods successfully before?

What mods are you using? They should be *.ftl files.
It's possible your download was interrupted when you got them.
Rename them to *.zip, and you should be able to peek inside them with your favorite zip utility.
Rename them back to *.ftl afterward of course.

During patching... SMM makes a one-time backup of FTL's vanilla resources, if it doesn't already have one. Then it copies that backup into the game folder (for a clean slate) and patches mods into it.

If you ever suspect that vanilla backup is faulty, here's how get FTL back to normal...

  • In SMM, Help-DeleteBackups
  • For Steam FTL: In SMM, Help-Steam:VerifyGameCache.
  • If Standalone FTL: Reinstall FTL.
  • A new backup will be created next time you patch.
