What problem does this address?
When I created #55799 I noticed that adding alignment controls to a core group block is not possible in the site editor. It is possible in pages. This is inconsistent and leaves users quite confuzzled.
When I say site editor, I mean the Full Site Editor (FSE) and the block template parts editor. The reasons behind this thinking were outlined clearly and helpfully by @tellthemachines and @jasmussen in that thread.
This is incredibly confusing to editors and I think we should do something about it to make editing and contributing to WordPress better for everyone.
What is your proposed solution?
@jasmussen proposed a great solution. Why don't we leave the alignment controls on blocks such as Group (I am guessing Columns has the same issue), but disable them by default and add a tooltip with some explanation as to why they have been removed within the FSE. This could be a short bit of text explaining the reasoning behind the decision to remove them. For any free lancers or agencies working with WP, it would be great if you could choose to enable the disabled alignement controls somehow. Perhaps with the use of a filter. We could also do roughly the same thing with the paragraph block, which is still impossible to set to align wide or full - issue here #31429 and here #54266.
I have now closed #55799 with a note to encourage other users to create their own new issue so contributors like @carolinan have a less confusing job on their hands.
Cheers
