When trying to open the recovery menu, it shows a blank screen.

Expected behavior
I can blindly type in the correct keys (ESC + POWER + RELOAD, CTRL + D, ESC + POWER + RELOAD, 3, ENTER), and it boots into linux, but I need to see the recovery menu. Sometimes it just shows up, but I need this to be consistent. Has anyone found a way to fix this?

Target Chrome OS Device (please complete the following information):

  • Board Name: octopus
  • Device Name: Acer Spin 511 R752TN
  • Shimboot version: v1.2.1

It might be that the image was not finished. Since I've experienced that too. But it also could be the media you're using, it could be faulty or very slow.

What USB or SD Card are you using?

The media is good. When blindly pressing the keys, it boots into linux with a video output. My problem is when booting into linux, the recovery screen doesn't show up. I need the recovery screen to show up for testing sh1mmer becuz when my friend tried it, there was some kind of 'failed to umount' error. so im trying to debug that and fix it so i could sell sh1mmer ;)

@Zzza38 It doesn't show up because when it is supposed to show the "Insert Media" screen, it checks for and begins running off of storage devices that are both plugged in and valid recovery media(should allow non-checked when dev-mode is set to on) before it displays the graphics. If you turn off linux, then unplug the storage device, then press ESC + REFRESH + POWER, it will show the "Insert Media" screen. To get to the part where you can turn off dev-mode, just leave the device unplugged while linux is off, press REFRESH + POWER to restart and get to the turn dev-mode off screen.

nope didn't work. It showed up before I ever have done shimboot, so maybe that's the issue?

So, the chromeos recovery menu doesn't show up, but the shimboot selection menu does?

No, only Linux once booted shows up. Not even the selection menu.

it fixed itself after crashing somehow. it crashed while building a Shimboot image with cinnamon desktop for octopus. This should be kept open because it kinda just... started working. Not after any of @Fighterhen63's solutions sadly.

Don't expect it to be consistent. Shimboot utilizes a bug after all.
