We talked in Helsinki about including objects' titles in their URLs instead of just numbers.
My suggestion would be to have something like this:
/projects/2344-amazzi-nobuyonjo-bwebulamu-project/
with the following examples being 403 redirected to the URL above...
/projects/2344/ (current URL) /projects/2344-any-slug-here/ (in case the title changes)

For updates, why aren't they in the scope of a /project/ ?
This would be ideal, for readability and SEO, though is quite long:
/projects/2344-amazzi-nobuyonjo-bwebulamu-project/updates/140-slug-of-update/
