Currently demo apps are placed under src/test/java but they are not real tests.

As a matter of principle you might be right, aaimiray. On the other hand, I would rather keep them in this project, because they are very small and also used for interactive tests. Moreover, they are separated from unit test by locating them in a special demo package. IMO this is a good and practical compromise that follows the "keep it simple" principle.
