All challenge pages are listed below. The challenges are in the categories of Education, Visualization, and Toolkit for Digital Universe. The top of every challenge page has a listing of all the Hackathon Projects created to solve it.

Education challenges

  • Hall of the Universe Tour: Create an app that gives museum visitors a new experience in the Hall of the Universe. (2 projects made)

  • Look Back in Time: Create an app to click on a star, and then show the user what was happening on Earth when the star light we see now left that star. (2 projects made)

  • Constellations in Motion: Create an app to choose a constellation, with lines attached between the stars, and move time forward and backward to see stars move relative to each other. (2 projects made)

  • Expansion of the Universe: Create an app to show expansion in any particular part of the universe. (No projects)

  • Space Weather: Create an app that shows the seasons on a particular planet. (No projects)

  • Solar Activity: Create an app to show occurrence of sunspots over time. (No projects)

  • Orbital Projections: Create an augmented reality app that lets you projects celestial objects on the floor and lets you move between them, displaying your velocity. (1 project made)

  • Cosmic Weight Loss: Create an app that sets your target weight and show what it would be on another planet. (1 project made)

  • Solar System Scale: Mount objects in the hall to represent the planets and create an app that uses augmented reality to magnify them when you approach. (2 projects made)

Visualization challenges

  • NASA Missions: Create an app that layers NASA mission data on solar system data to visualize space missions. (difficult) (5 projects made)

  • DU in VR: Oculus VR / LEAP / Google Cardboard app to visualize DU. (difficult) (1 project made)

  • Dark Matter: Visualize dark matter - how do you visualize something that cannot be seen? (difficult) (1 project made)

  • Space Flight Dashboard: Create a dashboard for Digital Universe that track real time and spacetime variables. (moderate) (2 projects made)

  • Eyes on Earth: Create an app that visualizes Earth observing satellite positions and describes functionality. (moderate) (1 project made)

  • Human Presence Space Map: How far out into space have humans left their mark? (easy) (No projects)

Toolkit for Digital Universe challenges

  • UI for DU: Create an improved user interface for navigating the Digital Universe. (difficult) (3 projects made)

  • API for DU: Build an API that outputs various data formats. (moderate) (1 project made)

  • Mobile UX for DU: Build a mobile framework to allow for complex graphics output. (difficult) (1 project made)

  • Build a Working Solar System: Integrate SPICE kernels and DU data to create a solar system simulation. (very difficult) (No projects)

  • Wiki of Resources: Create a wiki that unifies the various databases, photos, apps, etc. of Department of Astrophysics research. (easy) (No projects)

  • Scale Transitioning: Overcome the limitations of displaying large orders of magnitude transitions in scale when displaying DU data. (difficult) (No projects)

  • Flight Status for Partiview: Display "flight data" showing how an exploration of the DU shows various violations of physics. (easy-moderate) (No projects)

Wild Card challenges

  • Wild Card: Make anything you like related to space! (5 projects made)
