IE/EDGE performance, slow when opening a select

Bug, feature request, or proposal:

In IE / EDGE if I have a high number of component on a page, the opening of a select is very slow. Probably take time when calculate the style. Can anyone help me?

Which versions of Angular, Material, OS, TypeScript, browsers are affected?

Angular 6.1.2
Angular material 6.4.5
Typescript 2.9.2

@crisbeto #5113 is for mat-select with a large number of mat-option, the problem of performance I have is for a large number of mat-select with 3 option each.... Is not the same and problem is only with material 6 with 5 work ....
