Clean documentation/Markdown files

We need to update documentation and Markdown files (files ending in .md) and remove old information (e.g. references to GitLab instead of GitHub, old labeling systems, etc).

Tasks:

• Update README.md
• Update CONTRIBUTING.md
• Update LICENSE to BSD
