Progress bar example – transition animated "active" progress bar smoothly?

I've been playing around with the smooth progress bar and as we're actually using (old - 3.3) bootstrap I noticed that I can build on top of that easily. Bootstrap provides an active animation for progress bars - however, if I use that, the progress bar animation will be reset whenever I poll for an update, thus creating a stuttering effect.

Is there a known way to work around this?
