I bumped into a number of users this week who were looking to format a series within a visualization rather than using field formatters at the global level. TSVB already does this and it would provide a lot of value to our existing users. We could even use the same numeral.js library we have in the global field formatters. It would be ideal if we could also format dates.

Kind of related to #16821

I tag management team as well, since this is rather something we first should reconsider at the index pattern level how we want field formatters to behave in general in Kibana. There shouldn't be a "Vis specific" solution, that is not taken into account in index pattern, but rather a global solution if we want field formatters to be not linked to fields, but to context (like a visualization).

@timroes I agree there should not be a "viz specific" solution. However, this is where the need is surfaced most. I've come across this request numerous times over the past year and think it's something that if we focus on visualizations first, it could be low hanging fruit. That being said, I understand that we'd want to implement more globally across Kibana. Is it possible to plan ahead and introduce a re-usable structure in visualizations first? I'm worried that if we attempt to address globally first we may not provide value to our users for a much longer timeframe.

I actually found that this is a duplicate of #4957. I would close this issue, since the other one has more reactions so far.
