The current dashboard view is great if you have never made a dashboard but sucks if you have dashboards and just want to go to one quickly.

It would be a better workflow to just see a list of dashboards (if I have already created some) ala "new browser tab" style maybe. Really anything that avoids me having to now "search" for dashboards even if my list of dashboards is really not that long.

+1. the learning curve for new kibana users that just want to see our data is high. the landing page for dashboards should make sense to those first time users too.

+1 If there is only one Dashboard availabe, Kibana could also load that, and only show the list if there are more than one.

+1 If dashboards have already been created, obviously someone already knows about the + button to create one.

👍 this, the access to saved dashboards should be easier

It would be more consistent with the Visualize tab (which shows icons for new Visualizations AND a list of existing saved visualizations) if the Dashboard page also showed the instructions for adding visualizations to a new dashboard as well as the list of existing dashboards.
The user is currently 3 clicks away from their dashboard (Dashboard tab, Open Saved Dashboard, click on the saved dashboard link).
Listing them on the main Dashboard page reduces it to 2 clicks (assuming the dashboard they want is on the first page of dashboards).
But I also like the @timroes idea. If there's only 1, just show it. That gets the user down to 1 click.

Looking at some related issues; #3777 and #5820
Here's my suggestion;

  • If there are no saved dashboards, we get the same help screen as we have now.
  • Creating the first dashboard should set it as the default (like index patterns).
  • Creating additional dashboards leaves any existing default dashboard as the default.
  • The user should be able to toggle the default dashboard so it's no longer a default (no default). I'm not sure if this needs to be in the paginated list of dashboards or only when the saved dashboard is open (Set a default dashboard #3777 (comment)).
  • If there is a default dashboard, then clicking the dashboard tab should open it.
  • If there is not a default dashboard, then clicking the dashboard tab should show the help, followed by the list of saved dashboards (like the Visualize tab)

👍 Would definitely like to see this. Currently I have a markdown dashboard set as default and use a script to enumerate through all available dashboards. I then update the markdown dashboard document with the dashboards discovered as a numbered list.
