This is a minor bug on master because it's easy for users to work around the bug by setting a non-blank label. There are several solutions I could imagine:

  1. Treat a blank label as an error on the XY chart
  2. Treat a blank label as if it's using the default label
  3. Never allow blank labels, but allow users to clear their custom labels and return to the default

To reproduce it:

  • Set a Y/Vertical axis field with an empty "Display name"
  • Set a X/Horizontal axis field (keep the "Display name").
  • Leave the Break down empty
