Steps to reproduce

Unsure of steps to reproduce but there have been multiple reports of the room name being wiped out and becoming "Someone and x others". Creating this issue to keep track of reports.

One user has mentioned they've seen it on Element Desktop too, so potentially a synapse issue?

The name shouldn't fallback to this unless it is actually removed from the room.

Was this on a synapse homeserver perchance?

I have this same problem sometimes when initially syncing with synapse homeservers, which sometimes leave out critical room state when pushing that data, or so I think.

I just hit the behavior linked in the 2 closed tickets.

STR:

  • Started a conversation with a new contact
  • After a while started receiving incorrect names in notifications:
joe in joe and joe
🤦
  • Back in the app, the room name automatically updated itself to joe and joe

N.B. The DM room name is still correct on other platforms.
