Steps to reproduce

I don't know how to reproduce it reliably. It's just something that happens once in a while.

It affects my own iOS device (element-ios 1.8.0), and the devices of at least 2 other people I know. At least one of them is on v1.7.0. I believe this regression may be from an even earlier version. I just upgraded to 1.8.1, so I haven't had real use and the ability to see if I can reproduce the problem there.

The flow is something like this:

  1. Launch element-ios and use it
  2. Use some other apps
  3. Foreground element-ios after some time
  4. It appears no new messages have arrived (even though there's been activity in at least a few rooms)
  5. Send some messages -- they will be delivered
  6. Foreground/background, switch rooms.. whatever you do, you will not see any new messages

Outcome

What did you expect?

Rooms will light up, showing new messages. Tapping on rooms will render the new messages.

What happened instead?

It seems like syncing totally breaks and no new messages will ever be received. Sending messages works, but nothing will be received until you kill the app.

Your phone model

iPhone 11

Operating system version

iOS 15.2.1

Application version

1.8.0

Homeserver

Synapse v1.52.0

Will you send logs?

No

Thanks for the report. It seems to be a duplicate of #5282.
#5374 reports a similar issue but sending was not working.
