I've spent too much time trying to troubleshoot this issue, so hopefully this will help other people too.
In order to use the Remote Installer you need to make sure that you're console doesn't contact Playstation servers otherwise you will get a SCE_BGFT_ERROR_INVALID_ARGUMENT error because the PKG download triggers a check to the PSN servers.

The easiest way is to use @_AlAzif's (https://twitter.com/_AlAzif) DNS servers 165.227.83.145 and 192.241.221.79. Alternatively, you should block connections to gs-sec.ww.np.dl.playstation.net.
