The Saint (George Sanders) attempts to thwart a look-alike diamond smuggler (George Sanders) and his Egyptian partner (Bela Lugosi).

_The Saint’s Double Trouble_ should have been better. George Sanders playing opposite Bela Lugosi should be a no-brainer, but that’s not what _The Saint’s Double Trouble_ gives us. Instead, it’s George Sanders playing opposite George Sanders, with Lugosi reduced to little more than a cameo.

The gimmick of Sanders in dual roles never pays off. While his Saint character should come across as a lovable rogue, Sanders pours all the darkness into his second role as the evil diamond smuggler and, as a result, leaves his Saint character feeling one-dimensional. Sanders tries to compensate for this with his considerable charisma, but it’s just not enough. Further, once the gimmick is established, there’s still over 40 minutes of movie left to play out, with little to no story to help it along.

Fortunately, at 67 minutes this entry is mercifully short.

After his wife’s murder, a trumpet player (Val Kilmer) begins a double life as a punk speed junkie.

_The Salton Sea_ features some outstanding performances. Val Kilmer and Vincent D’Onofrio disappear into tricky roles that could easily be over or under done.

The script by Tony Gayton drags from time to time, but the sprinkles of black comedy help to keep things fresh, even if the ending does feel tacked-on and false.

Minor script problems aside, _The Salton Sea_’s other big problem lies in its look and feel. Director D.J. Caruso’s film is just too slick. Should a crack house really look that clean and polished? Shouldn’t it feel a bit more dingy? Even Kilmer’s run down apartment looks more like an antique then the roach-infested hole it should be.

A cynical Navy engineer (Steve McQueen) finds himself changed by his experiences aboard a gunboat in 1927 China.

_The Sand Pebbles_ could have gone wrong in so many ways. Steve McQueen could have sat back and chewed up the scenery, instead of delivering the restrained performance he does. Director Robert Wise could have been much more heavy handed with both the dramatic and political aspects of the story, instead of letting them creep up on you subtly. Screenwriter Robert Anderson could have painted the US sailors as innocent bystanders, instead of the monsters some of them were. _The Sand Pebbles_ could have gone wrong in so many ways, but the worst it does is stumble at the end.

For almost the film’s entire three hour running time, director Robert Wise and screenwriter Robert Anderson do a wonderful job of reflecting the social and political climate of 1927 China through eyes of Steve McQueen’s character. They take a complex situation and make it intensely personal, allowing the viewer to come to their own conclusions, instead of preaching at them. Until then end.

In the movie’s only real misstep, Larry Gates has an over-emoting and preachy soliloquy about countries and wars that makes the cardinal error of _telling_ the audience something when it should be _showing_ them. This is all the more glaring given the wonderful job the film had been doing for the last two and half hours.

A government agent must recover stolen vials of a deadly virus from a madman determined to rule the world.

_The Satan Bug_ is director John Sturges inexplicable follow-up to The Great Escape.

Gone are the wide open spaces that he utilized to such great effect in films like _The Great Escape_, _The Magnificent Seven_, and _Escape From Fort Bravo_, instead they're replaced by soundstage lab sets that date the film horribly.

Missing also, is a star-sudden ensemble cast in the vein of _The Great Escape_ or _The Magnificent Seven_. Here, Sturges commands a stable of mostly B-movie veterans led by former TV star George Maharis. While they’re all surprisingly serviceable, no one is a real standout and the film suffers for it.

The script by James Clavell and Edward Anhalt from the Alistair MacLean novel bears a passing resemblance to a season of the Fox television series _24_, though it's neither tense nor believable and loses what little momentum it has in the third act.

A daydreaming pulp writer (Danny Kaye) finds himself mixed up with a mysterious woman (Virginia Mayo) and a sinister doctor (Boris Karloff).

Your enjoyment of _The Secret Life of Walter Mitty_ will likely be commensurate with your enjoyment of lead Danny Kaye's shtick, as the film's plot is really just a flimsy device to afford Kaye the opportunity do a variety of skits and songs as different characters.

Yes, Boris Karloff has third billing, and there was a scene of him as Frankenstein's monster, though it was apparently dropped for the final cut. This is a shame, as it would have been awesome to see Karloff in the makeup in color. A shame made more so by the fact that they likely cut it in order to give more room to Kaye's mugging.

As for said mugging, it's hit and miss. Kaye's better with the subtler stuff, like his English flying ace, but his broader material ages poorly. Some of his songs are clever, but also overlong and drawn out. Ultimately, if you're a fan of Kaye, you'll love _The Secret Life of Walter Mitty_ and if not, well, if you're watching it for Karloff, you'll be disappointed.

With his wife and son away for the summer, a man (Tom Ewell) finds himself tempted by his upstairs neighbor (Marilyn Monroe).

_The Seven Year Itch_ should have been much better. Director Billy Wilder wanted to cast a then-relatively-unknown Walter Matthau in the lead role, but the studio wouldn't take a chance on a newcomer, which forced Wilder to cast Tom Ewell, who'd played the part in the original Broadway play.

Unfortunately, while Ewell may have been great on stage, he doesn't work as the lead in the more intimate medium of film. Much of the film features him talking to himself and Ewell just isn't charismatic enough to carry these scenes, causing the film to drag.

Fortunately, Marilyn Monroe is perfect opposite. Although the shoot was apparently a nightmare, with Monroe's marriage to Joe DiMaggio ending during filming and her showing up late and forgetting lines, you'd never know it based on what you see on the screen. She's the perfect temptation, a combination of innocence and seduction wrapped in an iconic package. Indeed, Monroe makes the movie.

Thus, fans of Monroe will probably enjoy _The Seven Year Itch_ much more than fans of Billy Wilder, who may come away disappointed. That disappointment that will likely turn to frustration when they realize Walter Matthau could have played the lead and probably saved the film.

A woman (Rachel Weisz) makes over her new boyfriend (Paul Rudd) leading to tension with his friends (Gretchen Mol and Fred Weller).

_The Shape of Things_ joins writer/director Neil LaBute's previous films _In the Company of Men_ and _Your Friends & Neighbors_ as a scathing look at gender politics and relationships.

This time around, he takes the simple premise of a pretty, outgoing girl transforming a shy, awkward ugly-duckling guy into a swan and turns it on its ear, exploring the motivations of the girl, the duck and his friends as well as their reactions to his transformation. Adapted by LaBute from his own play, there are only four characters in the entire film, but it packs a considerable punch and holds up well to repeat viewings, even after the big third act surprise is known.

As with LaBute's previous efforts, this one can be brutal. None of the characters are totally honest with everyone else, and only one is completely honest with themselves. The kicker though, is that, like LaBute's previous efforts, they're the only one that comes out of the film unhurt. It may not be a popular or reassuring sentiment, but it is an honest one and a large part of what makes _The Shape of Things_ such a good film.

In 1901 Nevada, an old gunfighter (John Wayne) rooms with a widow (Lauren Bacall) after learning he has a terminal cancer.

_The Shootist_ was John Wayne’s final film and would be unremarkable were anyone else in the lead, but John Wayne gives the performance of a lifetime.

Having battled cancer in real life, Wayne imparts a quiet dignity to the character that feels honest and true. In the film, he talks about a man's death being the most private thing he has, and Wayne, on some level, had to know his was coming. This role served as an improbable intersection for the lives of John Wayne the actor and John Wayne the character, finally allowing Wayne to reconcile the man with the myth.

Supporting Wayne there’s James Stewart, who played opposite him previously in John Ford’s _The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance_, and Lauren Bacall, who was familiar with cancer as well, having watched it claim her late husband, Humphrey Bogart.

Watching the film, however, you can’t help but think that this, not _Rio Lobo_, should have been Wayne and director Howard Hawks’ final collaboration, especially considering that much of the archival footage used in the opening montage came from Wayne and Hawk’s previous films.

Director Don Siegel does a serviceable job, but fails to build a film the equal of Wayne’s performance. The Ron Howard voice-over and Elmer Bernstein’s ill-fitting score are just some examples of Siegel’s missteps that, somehow, you just know Hawks would have corrected.

Homer inadvertently dooms Springfield to destruction by failing to resist the lure of free donuts.

_The Simpsons Movie_ is, against all odds, good. While it only runs a scant 87 minutes, it’s still impressive that the script is able to maintain the series’ distinct brand of irreverent humor throughout the entire film (and even into the credits).

In fact, the whole movie plays like a very good (albeit longer) episode of the series. And while this isn’t a bad thing (the movie even jokes about it), you can’t help but wish they’d taken better advantage of the format and the budget.

Also, the movie does date itself at various places, so it may not age as well as it otherwise would. But now I’m really nit-picking.

Returned home for their mother’s funeral, four brothers (John Wayne, Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, and Michael Anderson Jr.) investigate their father's death.

_The Sons of Katie Elder_ is an enjoyable, but not spectacular, western, notable as star John Wayne’s return to acting, just four months after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous lung.

Highlighted by Lucien Ballard’s great widescreen photography and featuring an excellent supporting cast including Paul Fix, George Kennedy, and Rhys Williams, _The Sons of Katie Elder_ breezes through its 122-minute running time.

Unfortunately, the film does have a rather glaring weakness. While John Wayne and Dean Martin are great as the oldest of the titular brothers, the younger Elder brothers are a different story. Earl Holliman barely registers and Michael Anderson Jr. is both one-note and annoying, a fact made all the more frustrating given that the cast also includes an under-utilized Dennis Hopper, who would have been much better in Anderson Jr.’s role. Further, the script does little to help the disparity, as Wayne’s and Martin’s are the only two brothers that are really fleshed out. Still, despite these shortcomings, the combined charisma of Wayne and Martin is enough to compensate.

British spy James Bond (Roger Moore) teams with a Soviet agent (Barbara Bach) to investigate a series of submarine hijackings and avoid a steel-toothed assassin (Richard Kiel).

_The Spy Who Loved Me_ is the tenth entry in the long running James Bond series, and the third for star Roger Moore. This was the first time the series used a completely original story, as only the title, and the inspiration for two villains came from Ian Fleming's source novel. Fortunately, the screenwriters managed to craft a solid spy thriller that finally gives Moore a movie comparable to some of the early Connery vehicles.

Much of this success is due to the one-two punch of Curd Jürgens and Richard Kiel as the story's villains. Jürgens is solid as a megalomaniac shipping magnate, and Kiel is great as the now iconic henchman, Jaws. Indeed, despite having no lines, Jaws is a great villain in the comic-book sense, and yet, by using him as an unstoppable, ever-stalking menace, the filmmakers mitigate any camp, thus making him a legitimate threat.

Toss in some great location photography, a good performance from Barbara Bach as the Soviet agent assigned to work with Bond, and more than a few good action sequences and you've got a solid adventure/thriller. While _The Spy Who Loved Me_ may not be the best in the series, it's certainly one of Moore's best and worth a look for Bond fans.

A Captain (Guy Rolfe) in the British East India Company investigates a murderous cult ambushing caravans.

_The Stranglers of Bombay_ is an often-ignored gem in the Hammer library. Playing more like a serial adventure than a horror, director Terence Fisher's film covers some of the same ground as _Gunga Din_, and likely inspired, at least somewhat, Steven Spielberg's _Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom_.

Featuring quite a large number of murders, including a whole caravan being strangled in their sleep, as well as eye gougings, and severed limbs, the film was pretty shocking by 1960's standards, which undoubtedly played a factor in the movie's being banned in several countries when it was released. That said, it would barely rate a PG-13 today.

While the black and white photography does a great job masking the English greenery, allowing it to pass for Colonial India, albeit barely. These kinds of decisions are typical for Fisher, whose film's always seem to belie their low budgets.

Granted, _The Stranglers of Bombay_ isn't perfect. Lead Guy Rolfe is workable in a role that should have gone to Peter Cushing, and though Fisher does his best, the small budget does show through at times, especially in the lack of true desert shots.

But none of these flaws is fatal. Clocking in at a brisk 80 minutes, _The Stranglers of Bombay_ is ultimately a competent horror-adventure that deserves mention among Hammer Film's better efforts.

In 1920’s Australia, the head (Robert Mitchum) of a family of sheep drovers finds his future uncertain when his wife (Deborah Kerr) announces her desire to abandon their roaming lifestyle.

_The Sundowners_ is a surprisingly engrossing look at a lifestyle and culture that’s long gone.

At its heart, the story is about the end of an era. Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr play a married couple of nomads, who, along with their son played quite well by Michael Anderson Jr., wander from town to town, herding sheep for money. Mitchum’s character is content with this life, proud of having nothing to tie him down, and no long-term worries. Along the way, they meet another vagabond, played by the immensely charming Peter Ustinov, who sees a kindred soul in Mitchum’s character. The conflict comes when Kerr and Anderson Jr.’s characters want to settle down and buy a farm, but this is just a metaphor for the inevitable end of their lifestyle, as the pioneer days give way to the 20’s and the modern age.

The film’s strength is that the story grows organically. You come to know these characters and feel enmeshed in their world. The lazy plot never intrudes on this immersion, but only serves to highlight the change on the horizon. Where so many Hollywood films opt for neat, definitive endings, the somewhat ambiguous nature of _The Sundowners_ ending is a welcome surprise.

Topping off the refreshing script and great performances, is some truly magnificent cinematography by Jack Hildyard. Hildyard’s photography of the sprawling hills and vast, open country is invaluable in helping the audience understand the lure of the drover lifestyle.

Granted, the lazy plot may be a bit too lazy, as the 133-minut running time is a bit excessive, but it’s a minor knock on what’s otherwise an enchanting movie.
