Building a kiln requires some precise logistics to create a 9x9 enclosure with the fire source also having exposure to air, and no wet blocks around it. I was only taught this process in multiplayer and I don't think I would've been able to progress the game without a guide, especially if I were to not look at any information about Exile beyond playing it blind.
Ideally, this game should be fully playable blind without any reliance on guides, but it's also great when mechanics are learned/taught indirectly rather than directly spelled out.
One way to do so would be through ruined structures being discoverable in the game world, and a kiln being pre-built with all the player having to do is ignite the charcoal to 'cook' the pottery around it. However, this doesn't account for players who don't explore as much.
Another way is tooltips on the unfired clay itself giving guidance, like "Needs to be next to a fire with no exposure to air", though that borders on spelling it out.
The biggest element that's unexplained at the moment is the need for lack of air exposure of the pottery, and how adjacent the pottery has to be for the fire to reach it.

The tutorial will have some demonstrations for this, including visible hot air carrying heat away from things. Simple diagrams painted on walls via graffiti will help explain it as well.
