code block syntax highlighting changes when reloading buffer

Hi there, great plugin. I'm trying to add some code blocks to my notes, e.g.

--sql
SELECT *
FROM mytable
--

It works fine when I first type it out or when I initially load the file. However, when I open another buffer the highlighting disappears and changes to one solid color. Any idea what's going on?
