I got away with these changes, although I do not know what the ramifications are for other browsers than the ones I tested: IE9, FF20, Chrome 26:

for .ui-slider, remove the "display: inline;" (this makes it a block again)
another adjust, slightly change the width of the handle:
for .ui-slider .ui-slider-handle, change the width to 11px.
