releasing 0.97.0

got a machine back after time off. did some soft pr mgmt this evening and seeing the state of the 0.97.0 milestone and see there's a good amount of stuff and there's been quite a while since the last release.

planning on doing one tomorrow. comments or anything welcome. sketch release notes below.
