With the merging of #449, distribute scripts should be functional, but only on Linux machines. This is because (if CMake is disabled) lfc is responsible for detecting the platform and adding the support files, and lfc can only detect the local machine, not remote federate machines.
With the merging of #1299, there is no option not to use CMake, so that might change the status of this issue. I believe Docker support has also evolved since then, which also might be relevant -- Soroush told me that they were the less hacky alternative to generating bash scripts. Overall, it appears that the launcher scripts need to be revisited, although I do not really understand them.
