It would be nice to modify the plugin slightly so that arbitry branches can also be build using the same parameterised builds as tags/revisions.

See version 0.3.2 under https://wiki.jenkins-ci.org/display/JENKINS/Git+Parameter+Plugin.
Can you check wether this release fixes your problem. I think it should.
