I need to add a marker from a remote SVG file.
I was looking to specify a URL using the layout.icon-image option, but I failed miserably.
Would this be possible and if so, how?

The only way is to overlay SVG on top of the map and syncrhonize using map move event. We're working on a feature to make this easier. See #656
