ℹ Computer information

  • PowerToys version: v0.21.1
  • PowerToy Utility: PowerToys Run
  • Running PowerToys as Admin: no
  • Windows build number: 18363.1082

📝 Provide detailed reproduction steps (if any)

I have started my PC
I've opend notepad.exe (or any other program)
Notepad is not maximized.
I press Alt + Space, x to maximize the window
or
I press Alt + Space, v (german windows) to enter into the "move window by keyboard" mode

✔️ Expected result

Alt + Space should open the system menu of the active window

❌ Actual result

Alt + Space opens an anonymous input box without any information about the program it belongs to.
the idea is great but at least there should be a label "PowerToys Run" somewhere

Description / Notes

Keyboard shortcut "Alt + Space" is used by Windows for decades. It opens the system menu of any window.
I'm using alt + space, x to maximize a window.
It took me hours to find that alt + space belongs to PowerToys.

Please add a label "PowerToys" to the input box that appears after pressing the PowerToys Run shortcut, so the user is able to identify that this inputbox comes from PowerToys.

Please change the default keyboard shortcut to something else that is not already used by Windows.

Please add a useful description if the user types "help" or about (in addition to the translated words)

Thanks

Our OOBE will help get this tweaked out of the box for an end user. You can change the default behavior in settings.

We wanted possibly Win+Space but we also face an issue that a group of users use that key shortcut as well. To make something powerful, we need an easily accessible shortcut.

Our readme does state the default keystroke.

@crutkas Yet another example of someone spontaneously noting this problem and you politely dismissing it. Being able to change shortcuts easily is very important, but not sufficient. The sooner this default is changed, the better.

You note that "we need an easily accessible shortcut", but those that include "R" (or something+Win+R) at least have the advantage of being easier to remember ("R" for "Run", and especially Win+R, as it has been the default for Run since Win95 -- I think that is when the Windows key was introduced on the Microsoft Naturals keyboard). I've found Ctl+Win+R as it is easily typed with just the left hand, is directly related to Win+R, and is mnemonic. I like Alt+Win+R even more, but it is the standard default for "Record video of game window in focus (using Xbox Game Bar)".

Being monolingual, I have only needed to switch keyboard language/layouts a few times (for customization/debugging/testing on a couple of projects). Many PowerToys contributors are multilingual and contribute in English here; they have noted Win+Space and Ctl+Win+Space are important to them. Is that generally true of typical users (i.e., does a typical native German or Japanese or English speaker use those keys; does a typical user use switch keyboard language layouts)?

Personally, I find the international use argument sufficiently compelling, but it is not an excuse to step on Alt+Space. (At least this time the straw poll wasn't mentioned #5331.)
