WSL 2.2.4 MSI Install failure - Failed to install the MSIX package (error: Package was not found. ) #12640

WSL Version

2.2.4.0

Are you using WSL 1 or WSL 2?

Repro Steps

During the installation of Windows 11 OS and while in audit mode, we encounter an installation failure when attempting to install the WSL 2.2.4 MSI installer.

The logs indicate the following error message:

"MSI (s) (4C!B0) [15:23:49:871]: Product: Windows Subsystem for Linux -- Failed to install the MSIX package (error: Package was not found)."

This issue occurs with a frequency of approximately 15%

Expected Behavior

Successful Install in audit mode.

Actual Behavior

Installation failed

Download and execute collect-wsl-logs.ps1 in an administrative powershell prompt:

Invoke-WebRequest -UseBasicParsing "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/microsoft/WSL/master/diagnostics/collect-wsl-logs.ps1" -OutFile collect-wsl-logs.ps1
Set-ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Scope Process -Force
.\collect-wsl-logs.ps1

The script will output the path of the log file once done.

If this is a networking issue, please use collect-networking-logs.ps1, following the instructions here

Once completed please upload the output files to this Github issue.

Thank you @AnXmail. This is interesting. What do you mean by 'audit mode' ?

Also, could you capture /logs while the MSI installation is running ?

To collect WSL logs, download and execute collect-wsl-logs.ps1 in an administrative powershell prompt:
