NetworkManager (NM) + wpa_supplicant AP mode combo vs hostapd #245

I first tried NM + wpa_supplicant. Everything actually works quite well, but speeds were limited to g, like HT/VHT wasn't here.

Today I discover Gentoo ebuild has ap USE flag, that specifically adds HT/VHT

AFAICT NM + wpa_supplicant combo would be a lot simpler to setup and bridge than having hostapd in the mix.

But all configuration examples in this repo are hostapd.

Was wpa_supplicant AP mode explored as a viable option ever?

EDIT even after enabling ap USE flag, out of the box configuration I get exactly 54 Mbit, because I think we're on 20 MHz and I don't see any way to override it.

Not seeing any relevant commits since 2.10 release either https://w1.fi/cgit/hostap/log/wpa_supplicant/ap.c although I built git HEAD now and trying that.

OK, I'm going for it. Taking one for the team and running at limited speed for a bit, in exchange for rock solid configurability and reboot survival.

I just posted https://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/hostap/2023-April/041480.html to see if upstream can help figure some performance things out.

Also learned: need to have /etc/modprobe.d/ entry for options cfg80211 ieee80211_regdom=EE (your country code) - or wireless adapter refuses to go into 5 GHz AP mode.

Great. My AP guide, that is on the Main Menu, is purely based on hostapd but I think it would be great to have some options for people here. It will be interesting to see what answer you get.
