I have checked if others have suggested this already

  • I have checked this issue tracker to see if others have reported similar issues.

Feature description

The macOS build is over 200MB. This is prohibitively large to download, especially in places with restrictive internet access (a network scenario that Mullvad commercially supports).

Please optimize the Electron or other package build settings so that the minimum size binary can be built for each release/platform.

Alternative solutions

Buy a flight out of this country, download the software, fly back in

Type of feature

  • Better privacy/anonymity
  • Better at circumventing censorship
  • Easier to use
  • Other

Operating System

  • Android
  • iOS
  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux

We are aware that the installers are not tiny. Also that they have been growing lately (with the addition of apisocks5, which is just there temporarily). However, there are numerous other issues talking about the size of the installer, so I'm going to close this as a duplicate of #1572, #5275 and #3085. All of them are closed since there is not a huge amount of stuff we can do about it.

Once intel macs start becoming sort of a thing of the past, we might split the macOS installer into two, one for arm and one for x86, and splitting the installer size in two. This makes it a bit harder to install, because you need to pick the correct installer for your architecture.
