This soon-to-be-merged eRFC explains a json output for the rustdoc tool. Supporting this as a frontend could render beautiful pdf documents with links and all other benefits of the current web frontend without the hassle of converting this via headless browser puppeteering (PhantomJS or similar).

--output-format json has landed on nightly.
