Description

In several countries (including #Bolivia), buildings has a name, but not addr:housenumber are displayed outside or inside those buildings , also those buildings contains bussiness inside of all kind, and peopple tends to orient themselves by the addr:streetname plus the name of the building where the bussiness and apartments are located, instead of numbers that maybe or not displayed.

Proposed Solution
Add addr:housename as desirable data to be collected and filled when inquiring for any kind of POIs, either including or nor addr:housenumber

Hi @jjiglesiasg, thanks for sharing the issue. I have added addr:housename to the address formats for buildings in Bolivia. But I am not sure which all countries would align to the same problem, so I can update their address schemas as well. I would appreciate any insight into fetching list of such countries.

Meanwhile, this is how the preview comes to be for any building in Bolivia, in the PR above.

@jjiglesiasg I only found a small number of objects in OSM in Bolivia which have addr:housename but no housenumber: https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1Y9J

I assume this is mostly because addresses are not yet well mapped in the country, but it would still be good to see some examples of how such "housename" addresses of buildings look in reality, and ideally some hints towards that these house names are used as addresses. Thanks!

How you can see the name Edificio or Torre or Mercado are quite more prominent that the number that may be o not installed outside of the buildings.

In the old times municipalities assigned and enforce all plots to have a number, however with the replacement of unifamiliar houses with apartment buildings, those new buildings were build integrating several plots with their own numbers and in the nowadays there is no enforcement for number plates so building names are more popular, known and easy to find.

I see this is now also discussed on the community thread: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/list-of-countries-that-use-housenames-for-buildings-other-than-bolivia/125200/13

At first glance, it looks like many of the pictures show cases where the tagging would fit more as building=* + name=… rather than addr:housename. I tried to find addresses on websites of Bolivian businesses, but did not find any that used something that resembled a housename in an address. Do you have any examples for that maybe?

Indeed those are the name= of the Building, the issue is NOT related to the name of the construction as such, is related to the business (of all kind) that are INSIDE those buildings who have NO NUMBER displayed, and the only real reference is related to the NAME of the building where they are located inside, hence the need of addr:housename (Malls, Commercial Buildings, Residence Building, Fairs, etc.)

I saw that you reverted the display of addr:housename in the address scheme for Bolivia. Looks like we need to pass thought a worldwide approval. Truly we do not care what people do at other places in the world. We need what we do here. Respectfully.

I'm not sure what you mean… Nothing has been reverted / changed about the address schema for Bolivia, yet. I'm still trying to fully understand the situation on the ground, which is not easy from the outside, as you can imagine.

Thanks for the concrete example on the forum. If these building names are used as de-facto addresses, then they probably should also be included in the address field in iD.
