It's possible to move / or optionally set commandbar in activity bar, like I proposal here:
microsoft/vscode#36526 (it's any API exist for this?)
I think this place is better than status bar ;)

Unfortunately, there is no api for it. That was the main reason why commands were implemented as a status bar items.
