Statistical functions

In pull request 79 user @brianmichalk1 suggests to introduce a few functions able to compute statistical analisys on the buffer.

While I like the idea, it also introduces a non trivial computational burden for those who are not interested in this info.

I wish to understand how relevant is this request among the user base.
