It's simpler than ranked-choice tabulation, trivial to program, and it resolves the problems with ranked-choice tabulation (STAR was originally developed for that very purpose, to provide a superior voting method).

There's also a more complex STAR-PR proportional voting approach as well as some simpler multi-winner versions of STAR.
