Basics of Investing

The habit of investment cannot be the result of an impulsive decision, but rather a gradual change in the mindset.
Although investing a lumpsum amount is not bad, it is actually the regular savings that helps in accumulating wealth over time.
Slowly and steadily, regular investing becomes a habit that can reward you in future. It provides the discipline to allocate money for saving before you have the temptation to spend it.

Goal based Investment

Before thinking of starting a monthly investment, the most important part is to define financial goals. Setting financial goals will give you a rough idea of the amount that should be contributed towards a goal. Some examples of common goals are:

To have life protection cover

To provide adequate cover for child education and child marriage

Build Retirement corpus

The investment instruments should be chosen based on the type of target goal. Some of the example saving instruments are:

Bank deposits (FD, RD)

PPF, PF

Insurance policies (Term Plan, ULIP, Pension plans)

Mutual funds

Equities (Stock Market)

Equities vs Debt

Choosing between Equity (Stock market) and Debt (Fixed deposits) is not an easy task. One needs to maintain balance between the two according to his risk capacity and risk tolerance.

Many people think of stock market as gambling, and do not rely on it as an investment measure. So the common tendency prevalent among most salaried people is to increase their contribution in fixed income instruments like PPF, FD, RD etc. However, they fail to realize that these deposits provide the interest rate similar to inflation of the country. This means that if your deposit’s value increases from ₹1 to ₹2 in 5 years, then your expenses will also increase in a similar proportion. Hence, there is no real accumulation of wealth.

There are a few factors to consider when choosing between equities or debt:

Goals

Let’s face it, Stock market is volatile and it cannot be relied upon for short term investments and intra-day trading. Hence, Debt/Fixed deposits are best for short term and inflexible goals. Choose stock market if your goals are long-term and are flexible enough.

Age

People close to retirement should generally go for fixed deposits, because the tolerance for market fluctuation is very low. Young and middle-aged investors should choose a combination of debt and equities.

The guru mantra of investing is that you have to choose the optimum combination of Equities and Debt.

The Choice

At the end, the task of choosing the best investment products is upto you. Let us take an example to study the impact of choosing between debt and equity.
There are three persons Ram, Shyam and Ramesh. All of them are 25 years in age and have the same goal to accumulate funds for child’s education. All of them have same funds to invest monthly, however each person follows a different approach.

Ram decided to go for lumpsum saving once very six months. He puts that money in FD, PPF, NSC

Shyam decided to invest monthly and put that money in fixed income instruments like RD, PPF

Ramesh decided to invest monthly and put that money in PPF, Equity Mutual fund, Equities, Bullion

Now all of them can accumulate sufficient funds for their children’s education (because of the good habit of investing regularly), but which one of above three is more likely to over-achieve his goal?

The correct answer is Ramesh, because of his balanced choice of investment products.
Although there is no surety with Ramesh’s selection as well but there are more than decent chances of accumulating more wealth than Ram or Shyam.

Choosing the correct strategy is half the work done. Check out our expected returns page to know the returns that you can expected from various strategies.
