Was the person in his corpse?
From my knowledge this often results in your character actually speaking in ghost chat instead of talking as a ghost in ghost chat.

When in your body and dead you also can't understand xenos etc etc.
Basically you still have the language barrier when in your body but when you are out of it you don't.
