I remember advertising cdat to MetOffice people years ago, during a EuroScipy conference, but they ended up developing their own iris+cartopy tools. I'm not familiar with iris, because I use cdms2+cdtime+cd/genutil for I/O and processing, but cartopy is really nice for maps (and a nice replacement of basemap). It turned out that building something on top of matplotlib was a better idea than vcs on top of vtk (PCMDI can't get it right all the time, but I miss some features of vcs)
