Usability improvements for very large systems

One of my customer ha more than 20k hosts and 100k services, and some host objects have more than 200 services each.
Dropdown menu for selecting hosts and/or services are quite too difficult to manage in such an environment:

• load time of every dropdown is too high
• looking into the menu for the right host or service can become troublesome

A better input method should be used. Requirements:

• load only a minimum amount of data, reducing loading time and speeding up user interface
• improve the overall user interaction when adding host/services to a Node

Describe the solution you'd like

I can think of 2 options:

1. An input control with autocompletion, like the ones used by Director
2. Replace each dropdown with a filter box and a list box: list will be filled only with max 100 values, and these contents will be reloaded by what is filtered on the filter box IF the filter box contains at least 3 characters
