This fixes a crash that looks like:

This fixes a crash in the garbage collector.

This is a cleaned up version of #4264. I got paranoid then because of other crashes, such as #4895. Regardless of any fears created by Boehm GC docs etc, this patch is at least more correct than the status quo and solves at least one crash.
Without this patch and #4895, I can't use nixUnstable daily, but with them, it appears that I can. That would be great news for anyone who wants to use flakes for anything but toy examples that have a low change of triggering the crashes.
